Caribbean vs Pacific: Which Coast?
Mexico has over 9,000 km of coastline split between two very different oceans. Your choice of coast shapes your entire beach experience.
Caribbean Coast (East)
- Water color -- Brilliant turquoise to deep blue
- Sand -- White and powdery
- Waves -- Generally calm (great for swimming)
- Sunsets -- Over the land (sunrises over the sea)
- Snorkeling -- Excellent reef systems
- Vibe -- Resort-oriented, touristy, tropical
Pacific Coast (West)
- Water color -- Deep blue to green-blue
- Sand -- Ranges from golden to dark
- Waves -- Generally bigger (better for surfing)
- Sunsets -- Over the ocean (legendary)
- Wildlife -- Whales, dolphins, manta rays
- Vibe -- More varied -- from resorts to quiet surf towns
Best Caribbean Beaches
- Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres -- Calm, shallow, turquoise perfection
- Tulum Beach -- Dramatic backdrop of clifftop ruins
- Playa del Carmen -- Walkable town beach with Caribbean water
- Akumal -- Snorkel with sea turtles in the bay
- Isla Holbox -- Car-free island, empty beaches, whale sharks
- Bacalar -- Not technically a beach but the lagoon's turquoise water deserves inclusion
- Cancun Hotel Zone -- Iconic white sand and blue water
Best Pacific Beaches
- Playa de los Muertos, Sayulita -- Calm water, good snorkeling
- Playa Medano, Cabo San Lucas -- The main swimmable Cabo beach
- Marietas Islands Hidden Beach -- Unique crater beach
- Playa Chileno, Los Cabos -- Blue Flag certified, great snorkeling
- Zipolite, Oaxaca -- Bohemian, clothing-optional, counterculture
- Mazunte, Oaxaca -- Quiet, beautiful, sea turtle conservation
- Los Muertos, Puerto Vallarta -- The lively main beach of PV's Zona Romantica
Best for Specific Activities
- Surfing -- Sayulita (beginners), Puerto Escondido (advanced)
- Snorkeling -- Cozumel, Akumal, Playa Chileno
- Families -- Playa Norte (Isla Mujeres), Playa del Carmen, Playa Chileno
- Romance -- Tulum beach zone, Holbox, Los Cabos
- Budget -- Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, Sayulita, Bacalar
Sargassum Note
The Caribbean coast has experienced seasonal sargassum seaweed accumulation in recent years, particularly from April through August. This can affect beach quality at Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. The Pacific coast is not affected. Check current conditions before booking Caribbean beach vacations during these months.
