Overview
Welcome to Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta sits on the shore of Banderas Bay, one of the largest bays in the Pacific, framed by the Sierra Madre mountains on the Jalisco coast. Unlike purpose-built resorts, Vallarta grew organically from a small fishing and farming town into a beloved destination that balances genuine Mexican character with tourist infrastructure. The cobblestone streets of its Old Town, the sculptured Malecon boardwalk, and the surrounding jungle-covered mountains give it a personality that sets it apart from other beach destinations.
Key Areas
Zona Romantica (Old Town South)
The most charming part of the city, with cobblestone streets, local restaurants, art galleries, and a lively atmosphere. This neighborhood is also the center of Puerto Vallarta's well-established LGBTQ+ community, with numerous welcoming bars, clubs, and businesses. Los Muertos Beach is the main beach here.
El Centro (Downtown)
Home to the iconic Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe with its distinctive crown-topped tower, the main plaza, and the northern end of the Malecon.
The Malecon
Puerto Vallarta's famous mile-long boardwalk runs along the coast from the Zona Romantica to the Hotel Zone. It is lined with sculptures by Mexican and international artists, making it an open-air gallery. Evenings on the Malecon are lively, with street performers, live music, and sunset views.
Marina Vallarta and Hotel Zone
North of downtown, the Hotel Zone has larger resorts and the marina area with restaurants, shops, and a golf course.

Food Scene

- Seafood -- Freshly caught fish, shrimp, and octopus are staples. Try pescado zarandeado (Nayarit-style grilled fish) and aguachile
- Birria -- Jalisco's signature stewed meat dish, often served with consomme for dipping tacos
- Street tacos -- Stands throughout the Zona Romantica and downtown serve excellent tacos
- Upscale dining -- A growing restaurant scene with acclaimed chefs
