What to Expect

Beneath the surface of the Yucatan Peninsula lies one of the most extensive underground river systems in the world. The porous limestone bedrock has created a vast network of subterranean rivers, caves, and cenotes that the ancient Maya considered entrances to the underworld. Today, guided tours allow visitors to wade, swim, and float through these illuminated underground chambers, surrounded by stalactites, stalagmites, and crystal-clear water.

Top Underground River Experiences

Rio Secreto

Located near Playa del Carmen, Rio Secreto is a semi-flooded cave system that offers one of the most accessible underground river tours. Guided tours walk and wade through about 600 meters of illuminated caves with spectacular mineral formations. The water is typically waist-deep, and no swimming ability is required. Life jackets and helmets with headlamps are provided.

Cenote Systems near Tulum

The area around Tulum sits above some of the world's longest underwater cave systems. While the deepest sections require cave diving certification, snorkeling tours at cenotes like Dos Ojos allow you to float through partially submerged caverns.

Xcaret Underground Rivers

The Xcaret eco-park offers a more controlled experience with three underground river channels where you float with a life jacket and snorkel through illuminated tunnels.

Tips

  • Not claustrophobic-friendly -- Some passages are narrow and low-ceilinged. If enclosed spaces make you uncomfortable, ask about the specific tour route before booking.
  • Water shoes -- Essential for walking on rocky cave floors
  • Leave belongings behind -- Most tours require you to leave everything except your swimsuit and water shoes in a locker
  • Waterproof camera -- If allowed, a waterproof camera or GoPro captures the experience well
  • Listen to your guide -- Cave environments require following safety instructions carefully

Cost

  • Rio Secreto -- Approximately 1,800-2,500 MXN for the standard tour including transport from Playa del Carmen, guide, equipment, and a light meal
  • Cenote snorkeling tours -- 800-1,500 MXN per person
  • Xcaret -- Included with park admission (2,500-4,000 MXN)
