What to Expect
Hiking in Copper Canyon (Barrancas del Cobre) is a serious adventure through one of North America's most dramatic landscapes. The canyon system in the Sierra Madre Occidental of Chihuahua state offers trails that descend from pine-forested rims at 2,300+ meters to subtropical canyon floors below 500 meters. The terrain is rugged, the infrastructure is minimal, and the remoteness is both the challenge and the reward.
Popular Routes
Creel to Urique
The classic multi-day route descends from the mountain town of Creel to the bottom of Urique Canyon and the small town of Urique. This trek covers about 50 km and drops roughly 1,800 meters in elevation. Allow 2-4 days depending on fitness and route choices. The trail passes through Raramuri communities, pine forests, and subtropical terrain.
Batopilas Canyon
A route to the historic silver mining town of Batopilas, deep in a canyon accessed by a winding road. Hiking trails around Batopilas explore the canyon floor and visit the old Satevo mission.
Rim Trails near Divisadero
Shorter hikes along the canyon rim near the Divisadero viewpoint, suitable for those who want dramatic views without the multi-day commitment.
Raramuri Culture
The Raramuri (Tarahumara) people have inhabited these canyons for centuries. They are famous for their endurance running, covering vast distances across canyon terrain. When hiking, you may encounter Raramuri communities. Approach with respect -- some communities welcome visitors and sell handcrafted baskets and carved wood figures.
Tips
- Hire a local guide -- Essential for multi-day treks. Trails are not well-marked, and local knowledge of water sources and route conditions is critical.
- Physical fitness -- The elevation changes are extreme. Good cardiovascular fitness and strong knees are necessary for canyon descents and ascents.
- Carry enough water -- Water sources can be unreliable. Carry at least 3 liters and have purification capability.
- Weather extremes -- The rim can be freezing while the canyon floor is hot. Pack layers.
- Altitude -- Creel sits at 2,340 meters. Acclimatize before attempting strenuous hikes.
- Limited infrastructure -- This is not a manicured trail system. Expect rough terrain, river crossings, and basic facilities.
Cost
- Local guides -- 500-1,500 MXN per day
- Accommodation in Creel -- 300-2,000 MXN per night
- Basic supplies -- Available in Creel; limited in remote areas
Best Time
October and November for pleasant temperatures and fall colors. March through May for wildflowers. Avoid the summer rainy season (June to September) when trails can be dangerous due to flash floods.
Plan Your Visit
Hiking Copper Canyon requires dedicated planning. The Chepe train provides access to the region, and Creel serves as the main staging base. Allow at least 3-5 days for the canyon area.
