What to Expect

Plaza Garibaldi is the spiritual home of mariachi music in Mexico City. Located in the centro historico, this large plaza comes alive every evening as dozens of mariachi groups gather in their signature charro outfits -- embroidered suits, wide-brimmed sombreros, and polished boots -- waiting to be hired to play. The atmosphere is festive and distinctly Mexican, with the sound of trumpets, violins, and guitars filling the air.

Visitors can stroll the plaza, listen to musicians playing for other groups, or hire a band to play songs just for them.

How It Works

Mariachi groups in the plaza are available for hire. You negotiate a price per song or for a set of songs. Common requests include classic standards like "Cielito Lindo," "El Rey," "Volver Volver," and "Amor Eterno."

Pricing

  • Per song -- Approximately 100-200 MXN per song for a full group
  • Per set -- Some groups offer 3-5 songs for a negotiated price
  • Negotiate before they play -- Always agree on the price and number of songs before the music starts

Other Music

While mariachi dominates, Plaza Garibaldi also features other traditional groups:

  • Norteno -- Accordion-driven music from northern Mexico
  • Trio romantico -- Smaller guitar-based groups playing boleros and romantic songs
  • Son jarocho -- Traditional music from Veracruz

Museo del Tequila y el Mezcal

The MUTEM sits on the plaza, covering the history and production of both spirits with tasting sessions included in admission. The rooftop terrace offers views of the plaza. Admission approximately 70-100 MXN.

Tips

  • Go Thursday through Saturday -- The plaza is busiest and most festive on weekend evenings
  • Arrive after 8:00 PM -- The atmosphere peaks around 10:00 PM to midnight
  • Stay in the plaza -- Stick to the well-lit plaza and surrounding restaurants
  • Take Uber/taxi -- Do not walk far from the plaza at night
  • Keep valuables secure -- Be mindful in the crowd

Cost

Visiting the plaza is free. Budget 300-600 MXN for hiring musicians, plus drinks and food.

Getting There

  • Metro -- Garibaldi-Lagunilla station (Line B/Line 8) exits directly at the plaza
  • Uber/taxi -- Request drop-off at Plaza Garibaldi
