What to Expect
Cozumel is one of the top dive destinations in the world, thanks to its position on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef -- the second-longest reef system on Earth. The island's western coast offers over 40 named dive sites with visibility frequently exceeding 30 meters, warm water (25-29 degrees Celsius year-round), and a stunning variety of marine life. Most dives are drift dives, where you ride the gentle current along the reef rather than fighting it.
Top Dive Sites
For All Levels
- Palancar Gardens -- A shallow reef with colorful coral formations, ideal for less experienced divers
- Paradise Reef -- Easy conditions with abundant marine life, popular for night dives
- Chankanaab Reef -- Shallow, calm, and great for beginners
For Experienced Divers
- Santa Rosa Wall -- A dramatic wall dive with overhangs, swim-throughs, and large sponges starting at about 15 meters
- Palancar Caves -- Deep formations with tunnels and caverns at 25-40 meters
- Punta Sur Reef -- The island's most challenging dive with currents, featuring eagle rays, sharks, and large pelagics
- Columbia Deep -- Towering coral pillars and diverse life at depth
Marine Life
Common sightings include sea turtles (green and loggerhead), nurse sharks, eagle rays, moray eels, barracuda, splendid toadfish (a Cozumel endemic), and hundreds of species of tropical reef fish. Whale sharks occasionally pass through from June to September.
Tips
- Bring your certification -- You need an Open Water certification minimum. Advanced certification opens up deeper sites.
- Drift diving -- If you have not drift dived before, tell your dive master. They will brief you on the technique.
- Equalize early and often -- The current can push you deeper than planned
- No-decompression limits -- Most dive operators run conservative profiles. Respect them.
- Day before flying -- Allow at least 18-24 hours between your last dive and flying
Cost
- Two-tank dive -- Approximately 1,800-2,800 MXN ($90-140 USD), including equipment rental
- Discover Scuba (beginners) -- Approximately 2,500-3,500 MXN for a pool session and one reef dive
- Equipment rental -- Included in most packages, or 400-800 MXN separately
- Night dives -- Approximately 1,200-2,000 MXN for a single tank
Dive Operators
Cozumel has dozens of reputable dive shops. Look for operators affiliated with PADI, SSI, or NAUI. Check recent reviews, ask about group sizes (smaller is better), and confirm equipment quality.
Getting There
Ferries from Playa del Carmen reach Cozumel in about 45 minutes. Most dive shops include hotel pickup in their packages.
