What to Expect
A temazcal is a traditional Mesoamerican sweat lodge ceremony with roots dating back thousands of years. The word comes from the Nahuatl "temazcalli," meaning "house of steam." The ceremony takes place in a small, dome-shaped structure (often stone or adobe) where volcanic rocks are heated and water infused with medicinal herbs is poured over them to create steam. A temazcalero (guide) leads the ceremony with chanting, drumming, and intention-setting.
The experience is intensely hot -- comparable to a very hot sauna but with added humidity and spiritual context. Sessions typically last 1-2 hours and are divided into "doors" (rounds), with brief cool-down periods between each.
The Ceremony
Preparation
You enter the low-ceilinged structure barefoot, usually in a swimsuit. The space is dark and intimate, holding 6-15 people depending on size. Heated volcanic rocks (abuelitas or "grandmothers") are brought in and placed in a central pit.
The Doors
Each "door" (puerta) lasts 15-20 minutes. The guide pours herb-infused water over the hot stones, filling the space with aromatic steam. Between doors, the entrance is opened briefly for fresh air. Many ceremonies include four doors, each with a different focus -- typically the four cardinal directions or elements.
Herbs
Common herbs used include eucalyptus, rosemary, chamomile, and traditional Mexican herbs like ruda and pirul. The aromatic steam is intended for both physical and spiritual cleansing.
Where to Experience
- Mexico City -- Several temazcal experiences in Xochimilco and surrounding areas
- Tulum -- Multiple operators in the beach zone and pueblo offer temazcal ceremonies, often at sunrise or sunset
- Oaxaca -- Community-led temazcal experiences
- Teotihuacan -- Some operators near the pyramids offer temazcal combined with a site visit
Tips
- Hydrate extensively -- Drink plenty of water before and after the ceremony
- Health conditions -- If you have heart problems, high blood pressure, or are pregnant, consult a doctor before participating. The heat is intense.
- It is okay to leave -- If you feel faint or overly uncomfortable, signal the guide. You can exit at any time.
- Eat lightly beforehand -- A full stomach can be uncomfortable in the heat
- Bring a change of clothes -- You will be thoroughly sweaty afterward
- Approach respectfully -- This is a cultural and spiritual practice, not just a spa treatment
Cost
Temazcal ceremonies range from 500-2,000 MXN per person, depending on the setting and guide. Hotel-based spa temazcals tend to be more expensive than community-led ceremonies.
